Florida! Florida! Florida!

http://msnbcmedia4.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Interactives/_swf/News/russert_timeline/photos/080613-russert-florida-timeline.hmedium.jpg

As the late great Tim Russert once proclaimed, "Florida, Florida, Florida!" And it was all Florida last night in Florida, as the Gators (no I won't say "chomped" like every media outlet today) beat the Chokelahoma Sooner rather than Laters 24-14. It is Florida's third national title.

I'll spare you the game recap because hopefully you were watching, but all I can say is ummm defense?

From these teams?

It wasn't the old-school Southeast versus Southwest conference physical clash of the titans defensive effort by any means, but both quarterbacks had sloppy games (2 INTs each) and as a result the aerial assault that most people anticipated didn't materialize fully.

However, there was a great deal of drama.

It came down to Heisman versus Heisman in the fourth, and Tebow put together the drive to give his team the title, connecting with David Nelson on one of his patented jump-shot passes for a touchdown.

If that was, indeed, Tebow's final pass in a Gator uniform, it was more then fitting. The guy that had the sloppy game gutted it out, muscled up and led his team on a game winning drive.

When Tebow had his Fassell-like proclamation back in October after losing to Ole Miss, I thought it was b/s, and more tired football jargon. However, after watching him and the rest of the Gators since, I'm convinced that it wasn't.

Some other things that caught my attention:

- Urban Meyer is on the fast track to being one of the greats of all time. Granted, recruiting in the state of Florida, especially with Miami dormant and Florida State down, is a picnic, but the guy's already won two titles at Florida and a BCS game at Utah. Imagine what he could do with a quarterback that was... you know... accurate.

- "Big Game" Bob is not very good at winning big games. Maybe he should change his name to "Big 12" Bob. Its hard to rip on a guy that's had so much success, yet at the same time, you have to pay a price when you become Atlanta Brave-like and choke almost every time your team is on the big stage. It's not as though Oklahoma was blown out in this game like they were in last year's Fiesta Bowl or in the 2005 Orange Bowl, but they were embarassed in the sense that their high-powered offense was limited to 14 points - a very Big Ten-like number.

- Oklahoma is still classless. After the game, a sizeable portion of the Sooners decided not to shake hands and made a beeline to the locker room like the little bitches they are. This same crew prevented Washington (who went on to win a grand total of zero games) from leaving their locker room to take their own field back in September. I'm not saying it's everybody because its not. Sam Bradford isn't getting in people's faces and obstructing their path to the field, but it is a good chunk of them. You wonder how much of this stems directly from their abrasive coach.

- Florida might cathch some heat. I had to hop in the car to head to work as Florida was running out the clock, but I got to catch Percy Harvin's post game interview - and it was stellar. The dude must have plugged '5 Hour Energy' a dozen times in about a minute, and yes he went out of his way to say it every time. He is still a collegiate athlete held to NCAA rules. Florida would hate to have a Reggie Bush type situation on their hands.

Tex-Mess

Another game, another reason for Texas fans to talk about how they got worked over by an unfair system. As I've mentioned numerous times before, yes it is unfair, no they did not get jobbed. But, Texas had every reason to show up big and beat the ever living shit out of the (really, again? *rolls eyes*) Buckeyes.

One problem, uhh they didn't.

In fact, they almost lost.

After a really boring half of football in which the only players to score were huge national draws Aaron Pettrey, Ryan Pretorius, and Hunter Lawrence, the Longhorns finally came out and had one hell of a third quarter to make it actually look like they were trying to get a split national title.

Texas dominated the third quarter, turning a 6-3 halftime deficit into a 17-6 lead going into the fourth quarter. Colt McCoy showed up large, throwing for one TD and rushing for another.

But then, in a shocking development, Ohio State began to look like they belonged in the BCS, adding a field goal, a Terrelle Pryor receiving TD from Skip Bayless's 2007 Heisman favorite Todd Boeckman and a Daniel Herron rushing TD with 2:05 left to take a 21-17 lead over Texas.

Then Colt McCoy really showed up large. Guiding his team down the field, grabbing a clutch first down by the nose of teh football and then...

O! H!..... no!

Quan Cosby

Quan Cosby cut through two Ohio State defensive backs like they were hot chicks in a horror movie, and scored the game winning TD with 16 seconds left.

So what does this mean? A question you have to ask after all bowl games except for the National Title game.

For Ohio State it's obvious. Sure they came close, and they played well, but the fact is they lost. They haven't won a bowl game since their Jan. 06 victory over Notre Dame. Since then, both Boise State and Utah have won BCS games! Ohio State was embarassed two years in a row and left their fans with a bad taste in their mouths yet again this year.

Texas is a little tougher to figure out. This is a team that should arguably be playing Florida on Thursday for the whole-damn-thing, and unarguably was a dropped pick and a subsequent hell of a catch by Mikey 'Bug Eyes' Crabs from being undefeated and in the title game anyway.

There was talk of Texas possibly getting enough momentum to snag the AP national title, but that has to be gone now. After seeing Ohio State get eliminated by Florida and LSU the past couple years, seeing them lose a tight one to Texas can't be good for Texas's chances. Texas needed to have an Operation Iraqi Freedom like 'Shock and Awe' demonstration to accomplish that, and they didn't.

Add into this equation, the fact that USC made Penn State look like they were not only coached by an octogenarian, but were, in fact, playing like octogenarians, and Utah beating Alabama, a team that was number one for five weeks, and you have a mess for Texas. Texas is a team left in the dark, USC is hotter, Utah is undefeated, and Florida and Oklahoma are where Texas wishes it could be.

A win is a win, but here a win just wasn't enough.

Where the Fuck Have We Been???

I'd like to personally apologize to all our loyal readers (if we actually have any left) for the technial difficulties we've been experiencing on the site recently. Namely, Drunk and Smooth-O being too hammered in the Struggle, and myself too busy coaching up Team Iceland in preparation for the forthcoming Junior Pan-Am games. However, enough with treating this site like this red-headed step child:
